Joseph Oelz tackled the 5th round of the WP Regional Karting championship this past weekend looking to maintain his healthy lead on top of the standings in the Junior Max Championship. He managed a solid P2 in qualifying to join championship rival Troy Dolinschek on the front row for race 1. The second row was shared by Simon Simpson-Heath and Charl Visser.
As the lights went out for race 1, no less than 6 karts all jostled for the lead into turn 1. Oelz emerged in 3rd and then went about chasing down top spot. Having worked his way back to first by lap 5 he again dropped back to P3 as the front 6 drivers fought for glory. Never giving up Joseph made some decisive overtakes when it mattered. A last lap move on Visser earner Oelz P1 at the flag.
Starting race 2 from pole, Oelz dropped down as low as P4 before fighting back to take the lead, but in the closing lap battles he lost out to finish in P3. In the final race of the day Oelz started in P5 but managed to make his way back to 2nd before a coming together with another driver relegated him all the way down to 8th. He did, however fight back valiantly to finish in 5th which earned him a hard fought second overall for the day while maintaining his lead in the overall standings.
Joseph now awaits the arrival of his out of town rivals for the 3rd round of the SA Rotax Max Championship which happens at Killarney Kart Circuit next weekend. He is in a tight battle at the sharp end of the Junior Max standings and will be looking forward to a good haul of points at his home round.
